Indulging in the fair food without the guilt: health experts share healthy food options at

Fair food is usually described as delicious and fried, but health experts in Central Arkansas say there is still a way to enjoy food at the fair guilt-free.

Some of the most popular fair foods are fried Oreos, fried ice cream, and funnel cakes, but Nick Stewart, a wellness coordinator for the Arkansas Heart Hospital, said there are some healthier food options you can ask for.

“Some of the healthy options would be foods in high protein like chicken kabobs,” said Stewart. “Corn is a good healthy option. There is salad here like Greek salad which is high in vitamins A and C and also potassium and iron.”

Stewart said island noodles and rice bowls were some other healthy options.

Health experts say to think of it like you are going to the grocery store: Never shop or go to the fair on an empty stomach.

“Eat before you get here because any kind of food that is cooking during the fair you are going to smell it,” said Stewart.

If you are worried about your calorie intake, Stewart recommends limiting your portion size or splitting the meal with someone.

“The most healthy option is probably the Greek salad,” said Stewart.
