As reported by the National Health Executive, record numbers with type 2 diabetes see remission success through new NHS diet plan
A record number of people with type 2 diabetes joined the NHS’s innovative “soups and shakes” diet plan last year, helping thousands lose weight and, for many, put their condition into remission.
Since launching in 2020, more than 30,000 people have taken part in the programme, now offered in every local health area. Run by NHS England in partnership with Diabetes UK, the scheme builds on major research showing that structured weight-loss plans can improve blood sugar control, reduce the need for medication, and in some cases reverse diabetes.
In 2024–25, over 13,000 people signed up for the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme – almost twice the 6,401 recorded the previous year and the highest number so far.
Findings from a recent study showed that among those who completed the course:
• Participants lost an average of nearly 16kg.
• One in three (32%) saw their type 2 diabetes go into remission.
The year-long plan begins with a 12-week low-calorie phase, during which participants consume nutritionally balanced soups, shakes and bars (around 800–900 calories per day), before gradually reintroducing healthy meals. Ongoing support is provided by clinicians and trained coaches, either face to face or online.
Experts expect hundreds more from the latest group to achieve remission in the coming months.
